Our problem revolves around car mechanics, ranging from professionals working in an auto shop to drivers who have a flat tire. When removing the car wheel/tire, either for maintenance, repairs, or otherwise, the mechanic must lift the wheel off of the car and place it safely on the ground. When this work is completed, the mechanic must then replace the wheel by lifting the wheel off of the ground, aligning the wheel bolt pattern with the car studs, and maneuvering the wheel to be mounted back onto the car. When replacing the wheel, it typically has to be lifted between 3 and 12 inches off the ground. This can be difficult as non-commercial car wheels weigh up to 100 lbs. The combined tire/wheel weight for a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, a typical passenger sedan, weighs 58 lbs. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) provides a 51 lb limit for heavy lifting in the workplace. The proposed problem will seek a solution capable of lifting, lowering, mounting, removing, and aligning a wheel onto and off of a car. It will make car maintenance easier and reduce injuries. The solution must also fit into an average car trunk, roughly 5 ft x 3 ft x 1 ft, to be used in roadside maintenance.

Our team plans to build a compact wheel lift that can elevate and rotate tires weighing up to 100 lbs up to 12 inches off the ground. When creating the wheel lift solution, the main challenge will be designing something stable enough to lift heavy tires while meeting the size constraints. We will also consider feasibility in our design since we have limited time and resources being a student capstone team. Another area of concern is analyzing and validating experimentally that the design meets our goals. Additionally, we must ensure our solution is “unique” and justify its use/niche since there are existing wheel lift products.
